Directions to Acadia National Park

Along the rugged coast of “Downeast” Maine is Acadia National Park. Lots of Acadia National Park is actually on Mount Desert Island, but don’t worry, you can get there by car . . . and I’ll tell you how, although naturally the driving directions all depend on where you start your journey.

Driving to Acadia National Park

Driving to Acadia National Park from Boston – take the I-95 north as far as Augusta, Maine, then head east on Route 3 to Ellsworth and on towards Mount Desert Island . . . the journey should take around 6 hours but it’s well worth the effort when you get to Acadia National Park.

Alternatively – carry on along the I-95 north until you get to Bangor, Maine, then head east on Route 1A to Ellsworth, once you get to Ellsworth, Route 3 will take you to your chosen destination. . . Mount Desert Island.

NB – access is limited to Acadia National Park in the winter time, so check out all of our pages before you leave home.

Distance to Acadia National Park

The following distances and driving times will help you to plan your journey to Acadia National Park, but remember, these times are approximate . . . it depends on how many coffee and toilet breaks you have, plus of course how fast you drive!

Bangor, ME – is around 50 miles away, so allow about an hour for your journey.
Portland, ME – is 161 miles from Acadia National Park, a journey which will take around 3.5 hours.
Kittery, ME – allow around 4.5 hours for this 211 mile journey.
Boston, MA – the 264 miles from Boston to Acadia National Park will take approximately 6 hours.
New York, NY – allow 10 hours for this 492 mile drive.
Saint John, New Brunswick – is 227 miles from Acadia National Park, a drive which will take around 5 hours.
Montreal, Quebec – this 424 mile drive will take approxixmately 8 hours.
Halifax, Nova Scotia – if you want to drive the 500 miles from Halifax to Acadia National Park, allow a good 10 hours driving time.

Doesn’t that look like a great place for a vacation . . . it sure is too!

Flying to Acadia National Park

There are a couple of options if you live far enough away to need to travel to Acadia National Park by plane.

Logan Airport Boston – have direct flights to Hancock County Airport which is only around 10 miles from Acadia National Park. From there you can easily pick up a rental car.

Bangor International Airport – is served by National Airlines, and is situated only around an hour from Acadia National Park . . . once again you can pick up a rental car to continue your journey.
