The freshwater swamps of the Big Cypress National Preserve are vital for the health of the neighboring Florida Everglades, boasting a healthy mixture of temperate and tropical plant life and a diverse wildlife including alligator (of course!), white tailed deer, hogs and turkey. It is also home to elusive Florida panther, but not many people have seen one so keep your eyes peeled. Many parts of the Big Cypress National Preserve are impossible to reach on foot, so you might need to hitch a ride on an air boat to really explore all that this wonderful place has to offer – don’t forget your ear protectors! Alternatively, there are tracks and trails which are accessible by off road vehicle, why not see about getting a permit if this is more your cup of tea.
The weather can be more or less divided into two types – wet and dry. The dry season runs November through to April, with the rest of the year being decidedly rainy (well, what do you expect in a swamp)? Don’t forget your mosquito repellent, this place is a mozzy paradise.
